Sisterhood Worldwide

Transforming the lives and spirit of young women

“Violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. Most societies prohibit such violence - yet the reality is that too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families, and on society as a whole. “ –UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon, March 8, 2007

Sisterhood Worldwide empowers women through mentoring and leadership workshops. The Foundation works with mentees to build confidence, giving them a chance to become self‐sufficient. Through entrepreneurial support, informational technology courses, English literacy, job training, mentoring and entrepreneurial leadership and educational programs, we help to strengthen their standing in society and spur them to become role models for future generations.

The program initiates visits to orphanages in the United States, Middle East, Africa and Mediterranean coasts to fund learning programs and mentor girls who lack role models, self-confidence and career support. This population is especially in need of the education, empowerment and the enlightenment that all of the ALO Foundation programs deliver.

Adoption is rare in our target regions. Girls' futures are largely dependent on pre-arranged marriages done through the administrations at orphanages. That is why this program focuses on building self-esteem through:

• English literacy
• General education
• Role modeling
• Information technology courses
• Job training
• Entrepreneurial support
• Scholarships
• Housing development

For target groups that are not orphans, the Foundation offers the Women’s Empowerment Program, teaching women that they have choices, no matter their social conditioning, and moreover, that there is help when they are ready to seek it. Women the world over face emotional, verbal and physical abuse, fear of social expression, lower incomes and lack of basic health and education, among a host of other problems and disadvantages.

The cause of this oppression is multi-layered, stemming from cultural, social and religious conditioning that can be difficult to crack. Achieving gender quality has been slow, as it confronts deeply entrenched attitudes. No country in the world, no matter how advanced, has achieved true gender equality. The ALO Cultural Foundation seeks to empower women, not only specifically through the Women Empowerment program, but via any outreach or method of assistance we perform.

We encourage women to embrace their authentic cultural roots and integral freedom of spirit - through increased education, empowerment workshops, and skill development. Knowledge and understanding of the issues women face can be rare commodities in many countries. By making that knowledge available to those who need it most, the ALO Cultural Foundation opens options and worlds of possibilities to groups who cannot envision improved futures.
